"When We Were Young" is a heartfelt country ballad that combines traditional instruments like banjo, fiddle, and twangy electric guitar with a candid spoken quality lead vocal and rich harmony parts surrounding it.

With a once-in-the-heart-forever-in-the-soul themed lyrics - Vaering tells the story of hearing a song on the radio that reminds her of an old friend she hadn’t seen for many years, when, as if by fate, later that same day, they unexpectedly reach out to her.

Væring says, “One day, during the COVID lockdown, I was listening to the radio when a song by Canadian artist JP Saxe, caught my attention. I reference the actual title (If the World Was Ending) and the whole COVID situation in my lyrics by saying, “although the world’s not coming to an end as such, it’s certainly all up in the air.”

Later that same day, out of the blue, I received an email from my friend which I literally quote in my song. I’m ashamed to admit that I didn’t respond. To this day, I can’t quite explain why. Maybe it felt too strange, like some sort of weird telepathy thing. I did write this song though.”

As a songwriter Vaering has come a long way. Starting out as a jazz artist in her twenties, reinventing herself as a guitarbased singer-songwriter in her thirties, when, in recent years, she has been drawn to country for its simplicity and strong songwriting, reflecting on how life's experiences have deepened her appreciation for nostalgia and even sentimentality in music.

With "When We Were Young" she fully embraces the genre while paying homage to the classic themes of love and nostalgia found in country music.

When We Were Young
(Trinelise Væring)

I heard a song on the radio today

Just a simple pop song, but it blew me away

There was this guy, he’d had kind of a scare

He’d woken up to realize we might not always be here

And now, he wanted to know

If this girl that he’d let go way back when

If she’d come over

If the world was coming to an end

And I just knew exactly what he meant

’Cause I’d show up for your funeral

Hop on board a plane and fly across the world

I’d sneak in unnoticed after the service had begun

I’d sit there in the back and mourn what we never had

At first I’d cry a little, then I’d be done

’Cause I’d still remember you as you were

When we were young

And just today I got your letter in the mail

It read, “I hope you and your family up there are all ok

Over the years we’ve been in and out of in touch

And although the world’s not coming to an end as such

It’s certainly all up in the air

So I understand your need to know

If I’m OK, so I was not surprised that you wrote

’Cause in my heart I think I’ve always known

You’d show up for my funeral

Hop on board a plane and fly across the world

You’d sneak in unnoticed after the service had begun

You’d sit there in the back and mourn what we never had

At first you’d cry a little, then you’d be done

’Cause you’d still remember me as I was
When we were young

Yeah you’d still remember me as I was
When we were young
