From one-sheet:
“I hope he cancels / ‘cause I don’t want to go” are the candid opening lines of this alt-country song. The song features the full array of the genre’s signature sounds—banjo, pedal steel, and twangy Telecaster guitars as well as lush harmony parts and a strong lead vocal— capturing a rich, authentic atmosphere.

With honest, barefaced lyrics rooted in self-doubt and apprehension, Væring crafts a relatable narrative. Even when we’re well-prepared or have been eagerly anticipating a new experience, summoning the courage to face it in the moment can feel surprisingly daunting.

As the song progress and the intensity of the music builds, so does the message—transforming “I Hope He Cancels“ into an anthem of motivation and empowerment. It is a bold reminder that embracing challenges is the key to growth.

Trinelise elaborates:

Whenever we engage with other people, get on stage, or basically just leave the house, we expose ourselves to the possibility of failing. Yet we do it every day, because as humans with dreams and aspiration, we need to challenge ourselves in order to grow. The whole idea of me traveling to Canada to record my album, only armed with my songs and my guitar, was one of those challenges.

“I Hope He Cancels “ also bookends the full album as it reappears as a short acoustic epilogue.

I Hope He Cancels
(Trinelise Væring)

I hope he cancels
’Cause I don’t want to go
I learned my pitch by heart
I tried it on my friends

I asked for this meeting
Said I was grateful for his time
But now that I’m all set
I can’t see my stars align

’Cause I’m not ready
Ready for the blow
I sure hope he cancels
’Cause I don’t want to go

I don’t want to reach out
’Cause she may not call back
I need a friend to talk to
And I’m guessing so does she

We did agree to hang out soon
The last time that we met
I’ll call her up tomorrow
Or the day after instead

’Cause I’m not ready
Ready for a no
So I’m not gonna reach out
It’s better to lie low
Yeah I’m not ready
Ready for the blow

I’m backstage waiting
Time now to go on
I wrote a bunch of new songs
That I’m all eager to play
The thing is I’ve been looking
So much forward to this day

But I’m not ready
Ready for the for the blow
If you don’t like my songs
I’d rather just go home
I’m not ready
But we already know
How the story ends

Of course, I’ll do the show
’Cause life has taught me a lesson or two
Never listen to that petty voice inside of you
The one who says don’t speak up
Don’t cry, don’t go, don’t call
You wanna set yourself up
For a certain amount of falls

If you gonna go somewhere, be someone and make a difference
If you gonna go somewhere, be someone and make a difference
If you gonna go somewhere be someone and make a difference
If you wanna go somewhere be someone and make a difference
