Lyrics

If I Were a Builder

If I were a builder
Or just somewhat of a handyman
I’d build you a house that smelled of timber

Plenty of bookshelves
And an outdoor fireplace
Big panoramic windows
And a sweeping view of the gorgeous landscape
And it wouldn’t be too far from the coast

But I am a writer of songs
And all that I can hope for is that
Someone sings along

If I were a road worker
I’d know my way around cement mixers
I’d be essential to my country’s infrastructure

I’d be spreading liquid asphalt
On the streets
That take to wherever
You need to be
I’d be working bare chested, due to the heat

But I am a writer of songs
And all that I can hope for is that
Someone sings along

If I were a midwife
I’d know all about vaginas and pain relief
In my own bare hands I’d hold each new life

I’d have helped a lot of babies
Enter this world
A lot of little boys
And little girls

And one day when they’re all grown up
And driving their own cars
Coming from the radio is
The sound of my guitar

’Cause I am the writer of a song
And like I always hoped for there is
There is someone, out there
Who sings along
